Total Group, in collaboration with St. Modwen, was entrusted with the responsibility of managing the design and construction of Mease Spencer Academy. This new, single-storey primary school is located in Hilton, Derbyshire. The project came into existence as part of a planning agreement between St. Modwen and South Derbyshire District Council. St. Modwen had been commissioned by the council to construct 485 new homes in the village.
The need for Mease Spencer Academy arose from the fact that the existing Hilton Primary School had become oversubscribed. As a result, there was a pressing requirement for a new school in the area to accommodate the growing number of students. Mease Spencer Academy proudly stands as the 7th successful construction project delivered by Total Group in partnership with St. Modwen.
This collaboration has been instrumental in transforming the educational landscape of the region. The school is an integral part of the Spencer Academies Trust, a highly regarded multi-academy trust (MAT) known for its exceptional performance. The trust oversees a network of primary and secondary schools across the East Midlands, ensuring that students receive a high-quality education. At Mease Spencer Academy, we are committed to providing a nurturing and stimulating environment for our students.
Our dedicated team of experienced educators is passionate about helping each child reach their full potential. We believe that every student deserves an excellent education and the opportunity to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. The design of the school has been carefully planned to create a conducive learning environment. The single-storey layout allows for easy navigation and accessibility, ensuring that students can move around the school safely and comfortably.
The spacious classrooms are equipped with modern technology and resources to support interactive and engaging teaching methods. In addition to academic excellence, we also emphasise the importance of holistic development. Mease Spencer Academy offers a range of extracurricular activities and sports facilities to encourage physical fitness and foster a sense of teamwork and camaraderie among students.
We believe in nurturing well-rounded individuals who are not only academically proficient but also possess strong character traits and values. Our partnership with St. Modwen has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life. Their expertise in construction and development has ensured that the school is built to the highest standards of quality and safety. We are grateful for their commitment to creating exceptional educational spaces that positively impact the lives of students and the community as a whole.
As part of the Spencer Academies Trust, Mease Spencer Academy benefits from the collective expertise and resources of the trust’s network of schools. This enables us to share best practices, collaborate on professional development opportunities, and provide a seamless educational journey for our students from primary to secondary school.
We are proud to be a part of the Hilton community and look forward to serving the educational needs of the area for years to come. Mease Spencer Academy is not just a school; it is a place where young minds are nurtured, talents are discovered, and dreams are realised. Join us on this exciting journey of learning and growth at Mease Spencer Academy.
The Total Group Solution
Prior to works starting on site, letters were sent to nearby businesses and residents informing them of the works that would soon be taking place and inviting any comments and concerns to be directed to the site manager. Regular communication was maintained throughout the project.
During the project, we visited Fairfax Academy secondary school in Sutton Coldfield where our assistant site manager delivered a presentation to students looking to pursue a career in construction as part of a wider careers event hosted by the academy. We also delivered a site safety talk to students attending the existing Hilton Primary School.
We worked with the new school’s headteacher to host a guided tour of the school a few weeks prior to practical completion. This was attended by representatives from Derbyshire County Council as well as teaching/ administrative staff and parents.
Reducing our environmental impact
Local supply chain: Where possible, materials were sourced locally in order to reduce travel distances and accompanying carbon emissions. Local subcontractors and suppliers were employed on the project, with 30% of subcontractors based in Derbyshire, and 60% based within a 30-mile radius. Local shops and cafes were also used throughout the build. Any spare timber was saved and donated to local families, encouraging re-use and recycling and reducing project-specific waste throughout the build.
Monitoring of badger sett: Ecological surveys undertaken prior to start on site revealed an active badger sett near to site. Total Group installed barrier fencing around the site perimeter to help ensure the protection of the badgers whilst works were taking place. Throughout the project, we effectively managed our construction activities to ensure heavy machinery was prohibited from being used anywhere near the flagged badger areas.
On-time and budget completion
The new Mease Spencer Academy was completed on budget and in time to welcome its first pupils in September 2019. It features seven classrooms, a sports hall, library, football pitch, and an all-weather multi-use games area, and will cater for pupils aged from five to ten years of age. Underfloor heating runs throughout the school and each classroom has a feature wall painted in one of the school’s own colours, lending a cosy, friendly feel to the new building.
As part of the project, we installed 80m2 of photovoltaic panels on the school’s roof, generating approximately 295W of solar energy.
