Project Overview

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) provide an emergency and accident prevention service to over one million people across the county. Since 1940 Central Fire Station had been the base of this service, but 70 years later, NFRS required a modern facility to cater for the change in service needs.

The Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) recognised the need for a new base that would cater to the requirements of a modern fire station. After careful consideration, the London Road fire station was proposed as the ideal location, offering energy efficiency, convenience for emergency call-outs, and additional office space for Nottingham City Council’s Emergency Planning Team. To bring this vision to life, the NFRS initiated a competitive tender process, ultimately selecting Total Group as the main contractor for the design and construction of the new London Road Fire Station.

The project involved the demolition of existing structures on the former brownfield site, making way for the construction of a state-of-the-art three-storey fire station. The NFRS prioritised energy efficiency, ensuring that the new station would be equipped with the latest technologies to minimise its environmental impact and reduce operational costs. By adopting sustainable design principles, the London Road Fire Station aims to set a benchmark for future fire stations in terms of energy consumption and environmental responsibility.

The location of the London Road Fire Station was carefully chosen to optimise emergency response times. Situated in a strategic position, the station allows firefighters to reach their destinations quickly and efficiently, ultimately improving the safety of the community. With its central location, the fire station is easily accessible, ensuring that emergency services can be promptly dispatched when needed. In addition to its primary role as a fire station, the new facility also provides valuable office space for Nottingham City Council’s Emergency Planning Team.

This collaboration fosters effective communication and coordination between the fire service and local authorities, enhancing emergency response capabilities and ensuring a seamless flow of information during critical situations. Total Group, the appointed main contractor, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the project. With a proven track record in delivering high-quality construction projects, Total Group is committed to ensuring that the new London Road Fire Station meets the highest standards of design, functionality, and safety. The company’s dedication to excellence aligns perfectly with the NFRS’s vision for a modern and efficient fire station.

The construction of the new fire station marks an important milestone for the NFRS and the community it serves. Not only will it provide a modern and efficient base for the fire service, but it will also contribute to the overall development and revitalisation of the area. The London Road Fire Station stands as a testament to the commitment of the NFRS and Total Group in creating a safe and resilient community. In conclusion, the new London Road Fire Station represents a significant investment in the future of the Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service.

With its energy-efficient design, strategic location, and collaborative approach, the station is poised to enhance emergency response capabilities and support the community’s safety needs. The NFRS’s partnership with Total Group ensures that the construction process is in capable hands, guaranteeing a high-quality and functional facility that will serve the community for years to come.

The Total Regen approach

The state-of-the-art-facility features meeting rooms, changing pods, three fire engine bays and office space for Nottingham City Councils emergency planning team. An external brick built training tower was also incorporated, providing the fire service with a realistic training environment for developing the skills of their firefighters.

The building has significantly exceeded efficiency standards through the use of smart lighting, insulation, and solar panels on the roof, as well as being linked to the Nottingham City District Heating System which provides a low carbon fuel source to homes and businesses in the city using energy recovered from waste.

Total Regen worked closely with the client to understand the historic significance of Central Fire Station. Our team incorporated the legacy into the modern facility by carefully installing the two stone statue lions from the staircase of the existing station and recreating the iconic mosaic.

Completed in August 2016, the building complements the city’s south side regeneration plans, helping to regenerate the London Road gateway into the city, and has made excellent use of a previously run-down site in a high-profile location. The team behind the development was entirely composed of Nottingham-based companies.

The facility was handed over on time and on budget following the year-long build and is now home to both the Nottingham Fire Service and Nottingham City Councils Emergency Planning team.
