Scheme Overview: At Total Group, we were entrusted with the task of undertaking extensive external and internal refurbishment of the existing GMB building on Newport Road, Cardiff. Situated on one of the busiest streets in Cardiff, this project required a focused and fully coordinated management plan to ensure the safety of the public and an efficient build process. With our experience and expertise, we implemented a comprehensive health and safety plan to address all potential risks and access issues throughout the course of the scheme.
Our priority was to safeguard members of the public while maintaining a smooth construction process. One of the key challenges of this project was managing the high traffic volume on Newport Road. We carefully planned all deliveries and construction-related traffic movements to avoid peak hours and high-risk periods. This proactive approach allowed us to minimise disruptions to the flow of traffic and maintain a safe environment for both pedestrians and motorists.
To optimise the use of space, we utilised the existing rear car park area for material storage. This strategic decision allowed us to efficiently manage the distribution of materials to each floor level. Through the use of a hoist, we ensured a streamlined process, reducing the time and effort required for manual transportation. Our team of skilled professionals worked diligently to execute the refurbishment project to the highest standards. We paid meticulous attention to detail in both the external and internal aspects of the building.
From repairing and repainting the exterior facade to upgrading the interior spaces, our goal was to transform the GMB building into a modern and aesthetically pleasing structure. The external refurbishment included repairing any damages, applying a fresh coat of paint, and enhancing the overall appearance of the building. We carefully selected materials that would withstand the test of time and improve the durability of the structure. Our team of experts ensured that the building’s exterior not only looked visually appealing but also provided long-term protection against weather elements. Internally, we focused on creating functional and comfortable spaces.
We addressed any structural issues, upgraded electrical and plumbing systems, and installed modern fixtures and fittings. Our aim was to provide a conducive environment for the occupants of the building, whether they were employees or visitors. Throughout the entire refurbishment process, we maintained open lines of communication with our client, the GMB. We understood the importance of collaboration and regular updates to ensure that the project was progressing according to their expectations.
Our team was responsive to any concerns or queries raised by the client, and we strived to address them promptly and effectively. At Total Group, we take pride in our commitment to delivering high-quality results. Project challenges and resolutions
Undertaking extensive external and internal refurbishment of the existing GMB building on Newport Road, Cardiff presented several challenges that needed to be addressed.
One of the primary concerns during the refurbishment project was the safety of the public. With the building located on a bustling street, it was essential to implement measures that would minimize any potential risks to pedestrians and road users. Our team conducted a thorough assessment of the site and developed a detailed plan to ensure that all safety precautions were in place.
We established clear barriers and signage to redirect pedestrians away from the construction zone and created safe pathways for them to navigate around the site. Additionally, we coordinated with local authorities to manage traffic flow and minimize disruptions to the surrounding area. Regular safety inspections and ongoing communication with the public ensured that everyone was aware of the construction activities and any necessary precautions.
Another significant challenge of refurbishing the GMB building was the limited access to the site. Being located on a busy street meant that there were restrictions on the movement of construction vehicles and the delivery of materials. To overcome this challenge, we devised a logistics plan that optimized the use of available space and minimized disruptions to traffic.
We scheduled deliveries during off-peak hours to reduce congestion and coordinated with local authorities to obtain permits for temporary road closures when necessary. Our team also employed innovative solutions such as using smaller vehicles for deliveries and utilizing nearby parking areas for staging materials. By carefully planning and coordinating access, we were able to ensure a smooth flow of construction activities while minimizing disruptions to the surrounding area.
Health and Safety
Ensuring the health and safety of everyone involved in the project was of utmost importance. We implemented a comprehensive health and safety plan that covered all aspects of the refurbishment process. This included regular risk assessments, safety training for workers, and the use of appropriate personal protective equipment.
We also established clear communication channels between the construction team and the client to address any safety concerns promptly. Regular site inspections and audits were conducted to identify and rectify any potential hazards. By prioritizing health and safety throughout the project, we created a secure working environment for our team and ensured the wellbeing of all stakeholders.
Efficiency and Coordination
To ensure an efficient build process, we focused on effective coordination and communication among all parties involved. This included regular meetings with the client, architects, and subcontractors to discuss progress, address any challenges, and make necessary adjustments to the project plan.
We employed project management tools and software to track and monitor progress, ensuring that all tasks were completed on time and within budget. By maintaining open lines of communication and fostering a collaborative environment, we were able to overcome obstacles and keep the project on track.
