PEBBLE MILL CARE HOME, EDGBASTON
The BUPA care home forms part of the multimillion pound Edgbaston Medical Quarter; a development of the entire 27 acre Pebble Mill site on the BBC Crèche site within their former television studios in Birmingham. The project involves the design and build of a 62 bed ensuite residential dementia care home.
The L shaped building provides a range of services including long and short-term care for elderly and dementia sufferers. Facilities include ancillary communal areas, dining areas, family areas, medical/therapy rooms, cinema, activity suites and a hair salon.
The scheme also featured secure gardens, external landscaping, on-site parking and a roof garden on the second floor.
Varying materials were used for the external finishes of the building including natural slate hangings, brick, timber cladding and render. It is a steel framed construction with pre-cast concrete stairs and landings.
Where possible, Metnor Construction likes to go ‘the extra mile’ towards maintaining great relationships with all stakeholders. School engagements are a popular means to connect with the community in which we are working.
With Pebble Mill, Metnor engaged with a local school to build and bury a time capsule under the foundations of the care home, and ran classroom construction competitions, whilst teaching the children the essential qualities needed on a construction site, along with the importance of collaboration and teamwork. Supported by the National Federation of Builders, we were able to demonstrate the latest technologies too, allowing the children to experience BIM (Building Information Modelling) through the use of Virtual Reality goggles.
The project commenced on site September 2016, with Pebble Mill opening its doors to residents in March 2018.
