OUR SOCIAL
ENTERPRISE

At Lane End Group we don’t just build houses, we build communities and we have responsibilities towards those that we help create. Working with a cross section of Registered Providers across the North West, we ensure that these responsibilities are met in the best of ways.

As well as maintaining the highest of environmental standards, we work closely with our social enterprise scheme, Lane End New Beginnings, to deliver social value to these communities throughout the North West build to help create long lasting, positive social impact.

Our aim is to improve the lives of people within these areas by giving them the skills and support to create positive changes in their lives which will have a positive impact upon the communities in which they live.

We do this in a variety of ways and have an open outlook on how this can be achieved, from mentoring, to sponsorship, to investments of time or resources. We prefer to tailor our help to create the maximum positive impact in each case, and so are engaged in multiple initiatives at any one time across our different sites that can help with any number of social issues – from tackling social problems, improving local people’s life chances, providing training and employment opportunities, supporting communities and helping the environment.

The impact of our work can be felt long after we have downed tools and handed over our housing developments – from community gardens and wildlife projects to charitable donations and careers programmes – we aim to positively enhance each area in which we build.

LOVE CONSTRUCTION

We are also committed to inspiring the next generation of young people to get involved in construction, by giving real insight into the variety of different roles that exist in the industry and deliver this through talks in schools and colleges and virtually through online learning platforms.

We are proud of our efforts in providing, and encouraging our partners to provide, apprenticeships across a multitude of disciplines throughout the business, and employing local labour wherever possible in our developments.

OUR APPROACH

Our approach sees us not just contributing financially but also involves a dedicated team investing time to ensure our construction sites create real value for the communities in which they sit.

We are passionate about providing local employment and apprenticeship opportunities, recruiting on a values basis, offering team positions to people who share our core values of Quality, Transparency, Community, Responsiveness, Integrity, Innovation, Partnership and Teamwork.

We ensure that our activities create live learning opportunities for local young people, interacting with local primary, secondary and further education establishments to enhance their learning and careers provision by giving a real life look into the construction industry through our wealth of industry professionals.

We work to understand how to truly create a lasting and sustainable positive change through supporting local not for profit and charity community organisations. We are not about re-inventing the wheel, rather oiling it slightly. We understand there are already lots of people doing fantastic things in their own areas and our aim is to connect them and provide support to enable them to work more effectively.

We are immensely proud to be a part of these local communities and our feeling of responsibility will only continue to grow as we arrive at new sites and in new areas. We will ensure that our local responsibilities are always met as we continue to contribute to the societies in which we work.

Anti Slavery and Human Trafficing  policy

Summary / Background

The Modern Slavery Act 2015 was introduced to address instances of slavery and trafficking in the UK. The legislation significantly enhances law enforcement powers and the level of support and protection for victims.

Modern slavery is a crime and a violation of an individual’s human rights. It takes various forms, such as slavery, servitude, forced or compulsory labour and human trafficking, all of which have in common the deprivation of a person’s liberty by another in order to exploit them for personal or commercial gain. We have a zero-tolerance approach to modern slavery and we are committed to acting ethically and with integrity in all our business dealings and relationships and to implementing and enforcing effective systems and controls to ensure modern slavery is not taking place anywhere in within the Lane End Group or across our supply chain (for the purpose of this policy, this includes our sub-contractors, suppliers, and other contractors/agents providing services to the Lane End Group). Accordingly, this policy is also applicable to our supply chain.

What is the requirement?

All Lane End employees and Lane End supply chain are required to follow the systems and controls that are designed to ensure that modern slavery has no place in our business. Where our standards fall short of our expectations or where you have a concern, you must report those concerns either to your direct line manager or a member of the senior management team

To enable Lane End to meet its commitment to ensuring modern slavery does not take place in our business, you are required to understand the forms of modern slavery and the indicators of modern slavery.

Why is it important?

The impact of modern slavery can be severe for the victims of this crime. As a responsible business Lane End Group is committed to ensuring that it has systems and controls in place to prevent modern slavery from taking place in our business or across our supply chain. The way we operate our business is set out in our Code of Conduct – this is underpinned by the principle of doing the right thing. Modern slavery is a criminal offence and can carry a prison sentence of up to life imprisonment.

What must I do/not do?

In applying this policy, we must consider our own actions and behaviours as well as those of our colleagues and those working within our supply chain.

We will:

  • familiarise and comply with this policy;
  • remain alert to any possible instances of modern slavery across our business or supply chain;
  • communicate our zero-tolerance approach to modern slavery and share this policy to our supply chain at the outset of our business relationship with them and at appropriate intervals thereafter;
  • ensure we follow our procurement standards;

  • carry out appropriate due diligence;
  • request that our sub-contractors and suppliers provide a modern slavery assessment;
  • ensure that all our employees are eligible to work in the UK and check ‘Right to work’ documents where we are responsible to do so;
  • ensure all our employees are paid at least the minimum wage;
  • provide training as appropriate; and
  • report any known breaches or suspicions of a breach of this policy to a member of the Senior Management Team.

Our supply chain partners must hold their own suppliers to the same high standards. If the standards that we expect are not met, we may review whether the business relationship is continued.

If you know or suspect modern slavery in any of our supply chain, you must not relinquish responsibility for reporting the matter to that particular partner – all instances of potential modern slavery must be reported to the Managing Director.

Sustainability

OUR COMMITMENT

For Lane End Group, sustainability is at the heart of all that we do. We build affordable, modern homes whilst operating in the most efficient way possible. From the materials we use, to the waste we produce, Lane End ensures that the highest of standards are maintained across all our operations.

Environmental responsibility is extremely important to us, and we are committed to delivering projects that are sustainable and have minimal impact on the world around us.

Through our Construction Scrap Scheme, we recycle our building site scrap and turn it into cash for the communities in which we build. Not only does this further our already outstanding recycling efforts, it also allows us to give back to the communities that we service and helps in our sustainability efforts as well as adding social value.

REDUCING CARBON EMISSIONS

Of all greenhouse gases, carbon emissions are the highest, contributing to global warming. By lowering their carbon footprint, organisations can contribute to an active reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, which can help in the fight against climate change.

At Lane End, we have numerous initiatives that help significantly reduce the amount of carbon generated from our operations.

  •  We encourage local labour at all our construction sites, reducing the amount of commuting time and distance. This cuts carbon emissions by an average of 110kg per week, per site, or over 60,000kg over a year.
  • We are working to have all our sites using 100% renewable energy by 2030, and ensuring that all our site cabins use smart lighting and heating, based on movement sensors, meaning we only use energy when needed, thereby reducing emissions from energy usage also.

RECYCLE AND REUSE

We have an extraordinarily strong and productive relationship with our waste management provider, which allows us to work together closely, enabling us to divert over 99% of our sites’ waste from landfill. 75% of this is done through recycling, with 24.8% being sent to a waste-to-energy facility, offering a sustainable alternative to the burning of fossil fuels.

Making sure that as much of our waste is diverted from landfill as possible is particularly important to us as landfill sites are renowned for causing a wide range of environmental and health issues.

Waste is a unavoidable by-product of the industry that we are in, therefore the way that we deal with this is of paramount importance to our operations and our efforts to be as responsible as possible as a business.

Lane End Group will always look for ways to further its sustainability work as we continue to lead the way in building sustainable houses throughout the North-West.

Careers

We are adding more staff to the team to meet the business needs and growth of the company.

Lane End continue to secure contracts for planning, development and construction and we have completed or are currently working on over 2,600 dwellings, which means we can continue to invest in the recruitment of experts in all areas of the business.
